The hydropower plant, which began operations in 1927, produces approximately 50 GWh annually, generating enough power to cover the electricity consumption of around 3,000 Norwegian households.
Flatenfoss is managed by AFKVannkraft and will celebrate 100 years of production next year. The decision to upgrade the dam facilities will ensure stable operations for the next 100 years.
The start of phase two
“The first machine has now crossed the level crossing to continue work on the project at Flatenfoss. This year, we will be constructing a new plate dam on the west side, completing the canal, and rehabilitating and improving secondary dam 1 and the intake at Agg 1,” says Knutsen.
BJ Mydland AS and Kaspar Strømme AS will carry out the main works, while Hergun Sveiseindustri will supply beams and various pipes for the facility.
The upgrade includes improving overall structural integrity and increasing water discharge capacity. The dams will be reinforced to withstand flooding and extreme weather conditions. Additionally, a new flood channel and spillway will be constructed to improve the dam’s water discharge capacity.
“We look forward to a successful project and a great collaboration with everyone involved,” shares Knutsen.
Securing stable and long-term power production
Climate conditions are becoming increasingly extreme, with more intense rainfall occurring over shorter periods of time. As a result, AFK Vannkraft is required to upgrade its dam facilities in accordance with current regulations to meet future climate-related challenges. Through investment in maintenance and modernisation, the company is securing stable and long-term power production.
The completion of the Flatenfoss rehabilitation project is scheduled for 2028.
