Founded on January 30, 1896, the company’s original purpose was to utilize the water in Arendals watercourse to generate electricity.
Over the past century, we have transformed into an international industrial investor while continuing to be a proud local producer of hydropower. Currently, we are in the process of building a new hydropower plant. Located in the river Nidelva, between Arendals Fossekompani’s two existing hydropower plants, Kilandsfoss hydropower plant will extract more energy from a river that already provides plenty of energy to society.
Kilandsfoss hydro powerplant our first hydropower newbuild in almost 100 years. We are proud to continue our legacy of providing people and communities with clean energy and are pleased to share our progress.
Below, we have gathered a few milestones of the ongoing Kilandsfoss building project.

Last autumn, we marked the initial construction phase of Kilandsfoss hydropower plant, a small-scale facility that is scheduled to start production of fossil-free electricity in 2026.
“It is truly rewarding to work for a company that supports the green transition in many ways – also through the development of more renewable energy. Utilizing the flow of water to produce electricity has been a specialty for us for generations,” says Benjamin Golding, CEO at Arendals Fossekompani.

Kilandsfoss progress report: Site visits
The building site for the future Kilandsfoss hydropower plant has seen a fair share of visitors these past few weeks. Most recently, the board of Kilandsfoss AS, CSO at Arendals Fossekompani, Ingunn Ettestøl, Mayor of Froland Municipality, Inger-Lene Håland, and Mayor of Åmli Municipality, Hans Fredrik Tangen, visited the construction site together with project leaders to discuss its progress. Currently, the area where the power station will be located is almost ready with the necessary groundwork and the present focus is on completing the foundation and the dam around the segment gate.
“Froland Municipality views Kilandsfoss AS as an important investment both for contributing to the production of more renewable energy and for securing future revenues for the municipality,” says Håland.
“It is great that we as a municipality can contribute to new green energy production through our ownership in Kilandsfoss AS. We in Åmli are very proud of this! We expect this to be a long-term and profitable investment for Åmli Municipality. Additionally, as the host municipality, we will receive secure and stable revenues starting from the commissioning of the power plant,” says Tangen.
